Hi everyone,

I wonder when did you start hand sewing, or what would you think is a good age to start hand sewing with your kids? My daughter is 6, she is very interested, and I taught her some straightforward basting.

Oh good question... I know I sewed clothes for my doll, but I was older... maybe ten? But first stitches - can't remember...

Actually, I started to learn to hand sew when I was in high school.  When I got back into crafting (roughly 2012) I back it back up.  I really think teaching them young is a good place to start! Props to you for wanting to teach her!

I learnt to hand sew clothes for my Daisy doll when I was about 6. Also how to knit and crochet at the same age. My children all went/go to a Montessori preschool and learn to sew from the age of 3. Helps to strengthen fingers and improve manual dexterity for writing, tying shoelaces, doing up zips and buttons when dressing. I would start teaching as soon as they are interest. If concerned about a sharp needle use plastic ones and some hessian.

I used to teach my classes to sew. I also had a craft club at school where we would sew.
The youngest class I had was Year One (UK system, where the children are aged 5 to 6). Obviously, I did enlist parental help when we were sewing, but the children were very keen to have a go. I used tapestry needles and brightly coloured embroidery threads onto Binca (a large holed Aida style canvas usually used for cross stitch). I've also used plastic canvas with young children. This has the advantage of not getting tatty when handled, which is sometimes easier for little ones to cope with. I do hope this helps.
How delightful to hear about the Montessori Preschool encouraging sewing. I do so agree about the improving of manual dexterity. It also helps children to feel that they can succeed, especially if they lack confidence.
